In a Cheshire manor house with an Aston Martin, horsebox and CCTV cameras outside, Eddie seems damn pleased with himself. Self-made man, “awkward bastard with one hell of an ego”, he doesn’t “do” depression, despises whingers and shows his womenfolk a good time. Elegant Pam and teenage Ruby are laden with smart carrier bags: they hug and joke and tease and quarrel, a normal family. But something is up with Eddie. He’s too keen to please, cagey about the whereabouts of the family dog, won’t answer the door and insists on feeding Ruby’s ponies himself. Wants the girls to stay indoors, trying on their new clothes and drinking champagne. Well, it’s a special family day. Very special. Be afraid.
